I arrived back late yesterday after a very successful trip. On 30 June I reached Gilman's Point for sunrise and made it to Uhuru Peak at about 8am. There was no wind at the summit so I was able to enjoy the fantastic views as the ice cliffs changed colour.
I even managed the challenge of 5 press ups on the summit to double some of my sponsorship money!
I experienced no effects of the altitude until about 5,300m when I started to get tired but I had the confidence that I could make it thanks to the altitude training. This confidence and will power saw me through those final switchbacks up the scree slope and the scrambling over the boulders to Gilman's. Obtained a second breathe after the sun rose to get to Uhuru.
Arrived down at Horombo huts at about 5pm. A very long, hard day but a great sense of achievement.
See you in September for a top up! |
