For
mountaineers we recommend two pre-acclimatisation tools.
- Intermittent Hypoxic Training (IHT)
- Sleeping in a Hypoxic Environment
Both are very effective at improving your oxygen efficiency
and getting you pre-acclimatised and both are available from
The Altitude Centre.
Intermittent Hypoxic Training (IHT)
IHT systems were developed by Russian Scientists; they wanted to speed up the acclimatisation process to train their military pilots and cosmonauts.
IHT delivers short bursts of very high altitude air every 5 minutes; this method triggers the adaptations in your body. The sessions are very pleasurable and only take 1 hour. No exercise is required.
Again it is recommended to complete these sessions daily for 3 weeks prior to travel.

Sleeping in a Hypoxic Environment.
The sleep systems replicate the air found at slowly increasing
altitudes. For this modality you sleep in a hypoxic tent positioned
over your bed or via a comfortable hypoxic sleep mask which
delivers cool altitude air.
It is recommended that you stay in this environment for 8
hours a day, every day, for 3 weeks prior to travel.
