Winter Skills in the Pyrenees

Getting out into the mountains can be a great relief from your daily routine. Whether you are a seasoned mountaineer or a beginner, or just looking for a fun-filled week to get away from the stressors of work and your busy lifestyle!

The Winter Skills trips provided by our friends at 360 Expeditions are designed for all abilities, to enable you to gain the experience and skills needed to tackle larger peaks, or to have an active weekend of fun in the mountains.

Your Guide: Stu Shipp

Founder of City Mountaineering, and experienced guide for 360 Expeditions, Stu is an experienced Mountaineer. He has led trips to mountains such as Kilimanjaro, Elbrus, many Himalayan Peaks and more in his 20 years of mountaineering. With plenty of time spent up in the mountains during the harsh Scottish winters, as well as leading expedition skills courses in the Pyrenees, Stu is certainly a safe pair of hands!

What’s involved?

Skills covered include: snowshoeing, safety in the winter environment, self-arrest techniques, assessing avalanche hazards, navigation basics, ice axe and crampon work on varying terrain and conditions, building snow and ice anchors and belays, moving together over snow and ice, construction of snow holes, weather forecasting, basic ice climbing techniques, and mountain ascent in winter conditions.

Plenty to learn, and lot’s of fun to have!

When and where?

The trip will take place from 26th January – 01st February 2020 in the French Pyrenees.

The trip includes:

– Airport transfers to and from Toulouse
– Stu Shipp as your guide for the whole week
– Transfers to and from the mountain base
– Technical equipment (ice axe, harness, crampons and snow shoes)
– Food while on the mountain
– 2 nights of accommodation based on 2 sharing at Papilio guest house with breakfast
– 1 town meal on arrival
– Mountain accommodation
