The Altitude Centre: Nepal Season 2022

As ever, late April and May is a busy time at The Altitude Centre, with a number of climbers heading off to attempt summits on peaks in the Himalaya and Annapurna regions. This year is no exception, with a number of first time climbers heading to Everest Base Camp, while others make their bid to stand on top of the world.

Already, early news of success is coming flooding in, with reports that Adriana Brownlee summited Annapurna this morning. In doing so, the 21 year old becomes the youngest woman ever to summit the 8091 m peak, considered to be one of the most difficult, not to mention dangerous, in the world. For Brownlee, the early Himalayan season saw a successful attempt on Ama Dablam, another highly technical peak topping out at 6812 m. Before heading out to Nepal, Adriana utilised an at home altitude system, sleeping at high altitude and completing intermittent hypoxic exposure sessions within the comfort of her own home, to help pre-acclimate to severe altitude and build endurance before the climb. Watch this space for her next move!

Himalaya

Across Nepal in the Himalaya, we’ve seen success from climbers heading to Base Camp, and beyond, with Tenzing Treks Nepal summiting Lobuche East, with members of the team having trained here on site at The Altitude Centre with exercise, the POD and high altitude PT, or at home via altitude tents. They join the dozens of climbers we have already seen head to Base Camp for the year, as well as those finishing their preparations before departure in the next few days!

Still To Come

For those heading up over 8000 m, the season is still young. When it comes to Everest itself, we have climbers on their early rotations through C1 and C2 and moving well, whilst others on flash ascents are in the final stages of preparation with simulated altitude training before imminent departures. We’ll be sure to keep you up to date as news comes in from the mountains!!
